Ladder Safety Month: Top Tips for Ladder Safety!
31/03/2023
Did you know that falls from heights are still the leading cause of workplace-related deaths? In fact, they account for a staggering 24% of all workplace fatalities, and between January 2021 and March 2022 alone, there were 29 unfortunate fatalities due to this cause.
But don’t worry, there are steps you can take to avoid becoming another statistic! To mark March being Ladder Safety Month, we’ve put together five tips to keep you safe and sound while working at heights.
Avoid holding objects as you climb the ladder
1. To prevent accidents, avoid carrying any objects while climbing a ladder. It’s essential to maintain an even weight distribution on all parts of the ladder and hold on to both sides with both hands. If you need to transport something, ask for assistance from someone else.
Ensure your ladder is sturdy
2. Taking proper precautions is crucial to ensure ladder stability, especially in wet conditions. By using rubber grip pads under each leg of your ladder, you can add stability to your ladder while working in the rain. These pads are affordable and effective in preventing slipping.
Set your ladder up in a safe place
3. When setting up your ladder, choose a safe location, whether you’re working in a public or private area. In busy work environments, it’s important to notify those around you that you’re working on a ladder and to be cautious. Small disturbances at the base of the ladder can cause it to wobble and tip over, making awareness vital for your safety.
Have the right clothes and equipment with you
4. Wearing the right gear is essential to ensure your safety when working on a ladder. Choosing sturdy boots and gloves with a strong grip can prevent you from slipping. Next time you need to access your loft, opt for practical footwear instead of leaving your socks on, and when working in wet and cold conditions, choose gloves with a firm grip.
