11/07/2016
Loft ladders are a must-have access solution for any homeowner or tradesperson requiring loft access. Ensuring safe access and easy access, they can help to transform any home. But with so many types of loft ladder available, how do you decide which type is best for you? From timber loft ladders to aluminium loft ladders, we look at what type of loft ladder would work best for you and your home.
Step one: Consider the use of the loft ladder
When it comes to choosing your loft ladder, consider what you plan to use it for.
Frequent use of loft ladders
If you’ve got a loft conversion, you’ll likely be using your loft ladder frequently to access to your new living space. In this case, you’re best of with a sliding loft ladder. Ladders of this type are easy and safe to climb and easy to operate. Timber sliding ladders are probably the best choice for homes as they tend to be quieter than aluminium ladders and look more attractive.

Infrequent loft ladder use
Many people only access their attics to check the water tank, pipes, and other household infrastructure. If this sounds like you, you’re best off choosing a concertina or aluminium loft ladder because they are easier to install and take up less space than a traditional sliding ladder.

Loft ladders at home
Although all loft ladders are safe, there are some types that are better suited to children and those with limited mobility. A sliding loft ladder offers more stability and is ideal for those less confident and less experienced in using ladders. You might also want to consider a loft ladder with a handrail for added safety.

Step three: Pick the right size loft ladder for your home
Once you’ve decided on the type of loft ladder you’re after, you’ll need to check the measurements. To work out the height requirement, you should measure from the floor of your landing to the top of your roof joints and up to the floor of your loft. You’ll also need to measure the dimensions of your loft hatch too.
