Here at Browns Ladders, we’ve been supplying tradesman and DIY enthusiasts with high quality ladders to suit a range of jobs for over 70 years. From window cleaners ladders, to fibreglass steps, we’ve got ladders for every application. Throughout our history, we’ve learned a thing or two about what it takes to be a successful tradesman, including the basic items you should be taking to work with you to get the job done as an electrician.
So whether you’re just starting out as an electrician, or you’ve got this nagging hunch you’re missing something, here’s a quick refresher on all the vital equipment you’ll probably need!
Approved voltage indicator (AVI)
This is an absolute must-have for anyone looking to complete any kind of electrical work. AVIs are used to determine the presence or absence of electricity, specifically AC voltages on sockets, switches, outlets, circuit breakers and so on. The main aim of of this product is to ensure that the power has been switched before you commence work on any electrical project. It’s no exaggeration to say this is a potentially life-saving tool that you’ll need to carry with you at all times!
Insulated screwdrivers
These are a staple of every sparky’s toolbox. You’ll need to procure yourself a selection of screwdrivers to match the variety of tasks you’ll need to undertake on a day-to-day basis. Due to the nature of the work you’ll be doing though, you’ll need to purchase screwdrivers that are insulated up to 1000V to protect you against the risk of electrical shock or arcing. As we continue through our list, you’ll be able to see a trend of tradesman’s products that have been adapted through insulation to suit electrical environments!
Side cutters or pliers
Side cutters and pliers are some of the most commonly used tools by tradesman of all kinds, including electricians. The only difference is that you’ll need to purchase these tools with insulated handles.
- Traditional pliers – used for cutting/stripping wires, and handy for removing nails.
- Long nose pliers – the thin, grasping ends make it easy to hold or grab when fishing cable.
- Side-cutters – great for when you need to cut wires down to specific lengths
Electrical wall chaser
The main purpose of an electrical wall chaser is to cut narrow grooves and channels into walls with accuracy and efficiency. This is done mainly to assist in the installation of cables and conduits. Wall chasers are normally operated with two diamond discs that are mounted at a predetermined distance – basically, you’re able to freely set the cutting depth within a defined range. As a side note, we’d recommend purchasing an electrical wall chaser with a built-in vacuum cleaner, as these are great for creating a dust-free environment to work in.
Fibreglass ladder
A fibreglass ladder is the perfect partner for working safely around electricity at height, due to its robust, reliable build. Crucially though, their materials make them the only safe options for electricians, period. They’re made from glass fibre (also known as fibreglass, or GRP), a glass-reinforced plastic that offers all the strength and versatility of an aluminium ladder – but crucially, without conducting electricity – protecting users from potentially fatal electric shocks.
We supply fibreglass ladders in bulk here at Browns Ladders, from leading brands like Murdoch International and Lyte, which are internationally acclaimed for their attention to safety detail.
Most of these items can be bought from any good tool shop or trade supplies store, but you’ll only get the very best fibreglass ladders right here at Browns Ladders.
